on Saturday 24th Aug. in ACOSS project room on the 30 Komitas st., Yerevan
WHAT SHE DOES is a project of Mexican artist Cristina Maldonado (choreographer provoked by video and film) in which she recycles films to create visual collages in real time.
Maldonado presents a live intervention of the film Sayat Nova of Sergei Parajanov, accompanied by the live sound intervention of Marcus Beuter.
“Each movie asks for a certain treatment, some of them invite to disrupt a predictable narrative, or to violate an empty form in order to bring some content into its surface. On the contrary, Sayat Nova has a symbolic nature that compresses multilayered meanings, and thus invites me to explore the possibility of freeing these symbols from its cultural and ideological load, in an act of faith in the pure form; trusting that gestures, rhythms and compositions can also be meaningful when meaningless”.
This project was prepared within the AKOS Art residency program and with the support of Mexican Embassy in the Russian Federation (SRE) and the National Endowment for Arts and Culture (FONCA/CONACULTA).
*Beneficiary of the grant Creadores Escénicos con Trayectoria (2012-2014), Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, México.

Cristina Maldonado* is a Mexican artist whose background in body movement lends a unique approach to her visual and conceptual experiments with video, sound, collage and performance, giving a palpable tactility that not only invokes the audience sensually, but also leads us to the realm of comfort and beyond. Her work unifies experimental theater, dance, participatory art, new and old media, her topics are body, communication and intimacy. She creates experiential frames connecting installations, videos and live action. She works alone or in collaboration with artists from different disciplines and has performed in Mexico, Eastern Europe, New York and Montreal. Since 2003 she has been directing various art and theater projects in Czech Republic such as Experiment in Terror in DOX Centre for Contemporary Art (2011), Theorem of Wanting in Roxy/NoD (2009), Fact in Festival 4+4 days in motion (2004), Study on Fact and Fragility, PQ (2010), Audio-witness, Honestly Old in MeetFactory (2010), Melodrama Mexicano in Transteatral Festival (2010).
